What advice would you offer to other artists looking to grow their business?
Firstly, build your craft before you build your brand. Skill and depth of knowledge create confidence. Secondly, be patient. Growth rarely happens overnight. Consistency, quality, and integrity matter far more than chasing fast trends. Don’t underestimate the business side. Creativity needs structure to thrive. Understanding pricing, production, communication and relationships is just as important as the design itself. And finally, stay authentic. The moment you try to imitate someone else, your work loses its soul. People connect with honesty. Individuality is your most important strength.
What can you share about your creative process?
What inspires you? What factors have played roles in the development of your artistic style?
Nature is my greatest inspiration, especially wildlife we find here in the British countryside. Animals have such character and I love capturing their spirit in a way that feels warm and playful. I’m also inspired by heritage textiles, traditional weaving techniques, and the idea of longevity. I want my designs to feel relevant today but still treasured in 20 years’ time. More recently, I have enjoyed exploring a more contemporary direction. For example, my latest Checked Sheep Throw gave me space to experiment with a bolder design language, while still staying true to who I am as a designer. Inspiration, for me, is about staying observant and emotionally connected to what surrounds me."
What can you share about your creative process?
My creative process always begins with observation. Living in the countryside, I am constantly inspired by wildlife, changing seasons, textures in nature and quiet rural moments. It’s the personality of an animal, the way nature creates a feeling within us. I sketch first, always by hand. I like the feel of pencil on paper. From there, I refine the composition digitally, considering scale, repeat and how the design will sit within a home. Because I design specifically for soft furnishings and interiors, I always think about how a piece will live in someone’s space. A blanket is not just a pattern - it’s something to wrap around your shoulders, drape over a sofa, gift to someone special. It must feel timeless, comforting and beautifully balanced. Wool plays a huge part in my process as well. Understanding how fibers behave, how colours translate in weaving and how texture interacts with design is essential.
